Use Slovenia’s small size to slow the trip down.
The temptation in Slovenia is to see everything because the map looks compact. With children, the better use of those short distances is usually the opposite: move less often, arrive earlier, and keep a weather-proof alternative in reach.
1. Two nights is often better than one
Bled and Bohinj are close enough that you do not need to “collect” both with separate one-night stops unless that suits your route. A playground or river afternoon after arrival can be more valuable than another check-in.
2. Alpine weather should change the plan
Do not force a mountain day because it was written into the itinerary. Keep Postojna, campsite pools, indoor play or a slower town day available when visibility, rain or thunderstorms make the original plan poor for children.
3. The Soča valley deserves a calm base
Kobarid works well because you can mix short walks, river scenery and family activities without moving the camper every morning. Adventure sports need operator-specific age and condition checks.
4. Do not make a mountain pass the family goal
A scenic road can still be tiring in a motorhome. Choose the route between Kranjska Gora and the Soča side for your vehicle, weather and driver comfort; verify current road conditions rather than assuming the most dramatic line on the map is the best one.
5. Use caves as logistics, not just sightseeing
Postojna Cave is valuable because the motorhome parking is about 250 metres from the entrance. That can turn a bad-weather day into a park-once day with almost no extra family transport.
6. Use Ljubljana and the Karst as your weather buffer
With the expanded map, you do not need one single “rain day”. Postojna is the easiest major cave day, Škocjan suits stronger walkers, and Ljubljana adds the Zoo, Arboretum and a genuinely indoor science centre.
7. A pool day can be part of the route, not a failure
Camp Natura and Terme Čatež are intentionally different from the Alpine camps. After several hiking and driving days, a destination water-park campsite can be exactly what makes the rest of the family trip work.
