Slovenia is easy to cross, but family travel still works best when you separate romantic camper ideas from the rules and the logistics: legal overnighting, toll class, child restraints, and whether a stop actually gives children something useful after arrival.
Overnight in designated places
Do not build the trip around informal “wild” motorhome nights. Ljubljana’s official visitor guidance states that motorhome parking, overnight stays and camping are permitted in designated motorhome stopovers and parking areas; on private land you need the owner’s explicit consent. Slovenia also has a wide network of formal camper stops and campsites.

Motorway tolls depend on vehicle weight/class
For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, Slovenia uses the electronic vignette system. DARS classifies registered camping vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes in toll class 2A regardless of height; vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use the distance-based DarsGo system. Verify your exact registration/class before entering a toll road.
Child restraints: check height and weight, not just age
Slovenia’s National Institute of Public Health states that a child under 140 cm or under 36 kg should travel in an appropriate child restraint matched to height, weight and age. For a camper, also check that the specific travel seat is a legal belted passenger seat — the living-area layout does not automatically make every seat suitable while driving.
Use paid campsites when they buy back family energy
Šobec, Špik, River Camping Bled and Menina are not interchangeable with a bare parking bay. The extra cost can buy a playground, pool, water access or indoor fallback — which may be the difference between a calm arrival and another drive looking for something for the children to do.
Postojna is a model park-once stop
The official Postojna Cave motorhome area is roughly 250 metres from the entrance and offers electricity, water and waste-disposal services. With children, that kind of proximity is often more valuable than finding the cheapest possible night.
