Norway · sample family route

A 7-day Norway camper trip without rushing.

This is a planning framework, not a promise that every family should drive the same route. The key idea is three bases, not seven overnight stops.

Why a framework? Norway is huge and weather changes plans. Exact routes should depend on where you collect the camper, ferry/road conditions and your children’s ages. This sample shows the rhythm we recommend.

Days 1–2: settle in at a high-facility base

Choose a campground such as Topcamp Hallingdal or Fagernes. Day 1 is deliberately light: food shop, playground, early dinner. Day 2 can be a family activity or an easy local walk rather than another move.

Days 3–4: one scenic region, two nights

Move towards a fjord/mountain region and stay put. A place such as Mikkelparken Ferietun works well for younger children because the campground and family attraction can create a full no-driving day.

Day 5: the “big family day”

For younger children this may be Eventyrskogen. For active school-age children it could be a longer hike. For experienced family hikers, a mountain objective may be appropriate. Choose one big goal rather than stacking a hike + long drive + late campsite arrival.

Day 6: recovery + play

This is not a wasted day. Pool, playground, beach, laundry, relaxed meal and a short local outing often make Day 7 much better.

Day 7: return with margin

Plan the final night/drive so a traffic delay, weather change or slow breakfast does not threaten the camper return time or flight.

With toddlers: 2–3 bases in a week. With active older children: you may move more often, but we would still avoid seven one-night campsites.
